Can you “Eat, Pray, Love” – in three different countries??

It was precisely this enticing book title combination that sparked my interest in the first place. Why had this author chosen to write about these three things in that fastidious order? Such question and a few others led me to read an international bestseller book titled, “Eat Pray Love” by Elizabeth Gilbert.

Gilbert is known for writing about men – but in this book, she garners the bravado to write a personal memoir. I know you hear “memoir” and immediately think or yell, “BORING” – but don’t let that word fool you – this book is a little more than just mere words. Besides it being personal, the writer speaks directly to you.

“Having a baby is like getting a tattoo on your face. You really need to be certain it’s what you want before you commit. But I didn’t want a baby – Instead, as my twenties had come to a close, that deadline of THIRTY had loomed over me like a death sentence, and I discovered that I did not want to be pregnant and, I don’t want to be married anymore.”

Gilbert goes on to cast a story about a tenuous period in her life when taking on a personal pilgrimage of self discovery – was all she needed to escape her daunting reality.

It was a cold November, around 3 o’clock in the morning. I was hiding in the bathroom for something like the forty-seventh consecutive night, and…. Sobbing so hard, in fact, that a great lake of tears and snot was spreading before me on the bathroom tiles, a veritable Lake Inferior (if you will) of all my shame and fear and confusion and grief.”

“It occurred to me that sometimes people in this state will approach God for help.”

“Hello, God; how are you? I’m Liz. It’s nice to meet you. I’m sorry to bother you so late at night, I continued. But I’m in serious trouble. And I’m sorry I haven’t ever spoken directly to you before, but I hope I have always expressed ample gratitude for all the blessings you’ve given me in my life.”

And, so she did – she abandoned everything – her life, her marriage, her house, her friends, and traveled for a whole year.  With every intention of finding herself again – she later discovered, PLEASURE in Italy, PRAYERS in India and BALANCE in Indonesia. But, without giving too much away, her book is about how things happen when you just let it.

“Go back to bed said this omniscient interior voice, because you don’t need to know the final answer right now.”

In a live interview on the Oprah showLiz Gilbert revealed that she was quite surprised and honored that her book had touched so many lives. “I wrote this book to kind of create a word ladder to pull myself out of a very deep hole,” she says. “I don’t need that ladder anymore, so it’s just sitting there in book form. To think that other people are now using it to tip it up against their dreams and kind of climb on up that is just incredibly touching.”

Her book forged an inspirational movement across the globe, as her story continues to touch lives – and there are new talks of “Eat Pray Love” hitting the big screen. So, here is your chance to get inspired. “Eat Pray Love” is available at most bookstores, but if you rather just listen, purchase an audio book version on iTunes.

I hope you enjoy this book!
