Winter Solstice – December 21 or 22 (depending on the shift of the calendar), the first day of winter. That is when the nights get longer and the days get shorter.
Every year I notice that this is when people begin to “winterize their love life.” With some it’s like musical chairs, whoever they are with when the music stops is who they choose to ride out the winter with. But, when spring rolls around and “winter wood” is no longer needed, its back to the single life.
According to the CDC’s National Center for Health Statistics, more babies are born in August and September than any other months of the year. So, I suppose that would make November and December the most romantic months of the year, whether you are married, in a serious relationship or just temping through the winter.
I agree that winter is a very romantic time of the year. You have less of a desire to be out on the town and would prefer snuggling by the fireplace with your loved one immersed in the joys of not having to leave the house. You can rent movies directly from your TV; there are convenient food delivery services that will pick up and deliver food from restaurants that don’t even offer delivery.
Enjoying the winter with your sweetie doesn’t have to be all about maximizing romance. It’s about enjoying each others’ company while not getting sick of each other. So, I will skip the traditional romantic ideas of writing poems to each other or bundling up and taking a walk through the snow arm-in-arm.
Here are some suggestions:
-How about a fun winter get-away? Peak tourism season for vacation spots located closer to the equator is January to April, (whereas June to September is the low season and tends to be when people go on vacations with the kids).
-A small get together in which both “his and her” friends are invited over. My friends and I have regular band hero, guitar hero and rock band get-togethers. A lot of women do not enjoy playing video games, however, these games tend to be a favorite among the female population.
-Instead of ordering out, grab a recipe book and make a home cooked meal together. A former boyfriend of mine once suggested that we make breakfast together. I would have never expected that but I thought it was super romantic. I love making LARGE breakfasts, but it gets hard to manage all the different things you are cooking at once. No one wants cold eggs and lukewarm hash browns with hot pancakes. So, both of us managing the various items together was a sweet and fun idea.
-Try making homemade sangria! The best sangria I have ever had was homemade. You might even try some other more time consuming drinks like frozen margaritas or mojitos instead of just grabbing a beer or glass of wine.
Just take it easy, relax and have fun!
