SADE – Soldier Of Love

By G. Valentino Ball

When you put out seven studio albums in 26 years, you can’t exactly be called a workaholic.  But, when you are also one of the most revered bands in the history of Soul music, you get a pass.  Like her fellow Soul brother Maxwell, Helen Folasade Adu and her bandmates are back after an extended layoff with superior work.  Right on time for Valentine’s Day, Sade delivers Soldier Of Love and it was worth the wait.

Tardiness can be forgiven especially when the results are of this quality.  Don’t expect any Auto tune laced Hip Hop masquerading as R&B with this set.  Having built a fanatical following Sade is known for deep, rich Soul music.  This is classic Soul/R&B at its best.  Tales of lost love and scorned lovers over lush beds of jazz infused Soul music.  While they do stay in very familiar territory with selections like “The Moon And The Sky” and “Long Hard Road” the album has a couple of interesting turns as well.  The military drum roll and sparse instrumentation of “Soldier Of Love” sound radical when compared to their catalog.  They are able to keep it fresh without sounding like they are chasing trends.

It’s hard to believe that it’s been nearly a decade since the last album.  But, even with 10 years gone, Sade doesn’t miss a step.
