Tips For Planning A Family Vacation!!

By Nicki D.

Want to take a trip with the family this summer?  Well, better start planning NOW!!

Here are a few tips to help you along the way:

-Decide on a budget and stick with it! - A family vacation should be fun and relaxing so make sure it doesn’t break the family budget!  (What good is a vacation if you won’t have a home to come back to?)  Be reasonable about what you want and can spend.  The vacation budget plan should include accommodations, transportation, meals, souvenirs and incidentals.  You may have to consider babysitting services for younger children which should also be included in the budget; some hotels charge $200 or more for babysiting services so be sure to check before you decide.

-Decide on a destination - Of course probably the biggest factor in deciding where to go is your budget, but the age of your children and what the family wants to do are also factors.  If your children are under the age of ten picking a destination with plenty of child friendly activities is essential.  If you have older children, you should involve them in the decision process.  If they are involved in the planning process they are more likely to enjoy themselves on the trip.

-Plan EARLY – Many vacation spots fill up early.  Not only that but transportation and accommodation costs are much cheaper IF you plan early!  So if you want to take that great summer vacation for cheap you should get a move on!

-Have an itinerary (but make it flexible!) – Figure out your daily schedule, not to take away from the “idea” of vacation but to alleviate the stress of trying to figure out what to to and where to go when you get there.  If you already have an itinerary planned before you set foot at your destination then you won’t have to try to figure out what to do, where to go and how to get there, which can eat up precious vacation time when you get there.  Oh,  be sure to plan some “grown up” time!

-Have fun! – Remember it’s a vacation, so be sure to take full advantage of your vacation time.  Relax and have fun with your family!

I’m a married mother of 4. For the past few years, when taking family vacations, we bring our babysitter along for the trip. She has cared for our children since our youngest was around 2, who is now 11. We consider her apart of the family so her presence is always a delight. Her attendance allows the hubby and I a chance to enjoy one another during our family vacation. Her expenditures are calculated into our travel budget; so the cost isn’t “so” overwhelming. By chance if our sitter is unavailable, we opt to take a family member, so either way the event becomes more of a family affair. Either way the added help makes the vacation a memorable one for all!
