Destress and regain strength and energy after pregnancy with yoga

The experience of childbirth, beautiful though it may be, puts a lot of stress on the body and often leaves new mommies exhausted and stressed.  The next few weeks after the baby is born can leave new moms feeling overwhelmed, tired and sapped of energy.  Postnatal and “mommy and me” yoga are very effective ways to regain energy and strength while reducing stress and regaining that pre-pregnancy body.

Although there is some debate about when a new mom can begin postnatal yoga, most doctors recommend a minimum amount of recovery time after giving birth before beginning or resuming a workout.  Because of this, it’s best to wait for the greenlight from the obstetrician before beginning an exercise regimen.

Many communities have postnatal and “mommy and me” yoga classes.  These classes teach poses that moms can do with their babies while providing an environment to meet other new moms and share experiences.  There are several postnatal yoga DVDs to choose from if finding a class isn’t an option.

The benefits of yoga are many.  The use of asanas or poses not only increases flexibility and muscle tone but also aids in balance and posture.  Yoga also teaches meditation and breathing techniques to reduce stress and calm the mind.

Postnatal yoga focuses on re-energizing and relieving problems that may have developed during pregnancy and after child birth.  A weakened pelvic floor, weakened abs, neck and shoulder pain as well as fatigue and decreased stamina and endurance can all be helped with postnatal yoga.  ”Mommy and me” yoga uses poses that also benefit baby, helping to relieve colic and crying.

Another benefit of postnatal and “mommy and me” yoga classes is that they are perfect for all skill levels.  Many classes also incorporate baby massage, which experts believe, helps to increase babies’ overall health, soothes and calms babies which reduces crying and helps in bonding.  Older children can enjoy the experience as well. Getting them started early can help them develop a love of exercise that can follow them into adulthood.

Having a new baby doesn’t mean being unable to workout.  Yoga can be perfect for maintaining a new mother’s physical and mental well-being.
