When you are a child it seems like summer is forever. It’s days at the pool, it’s catching fireflies, it’s ice cream and barbeques. A fun way to remember the summer of 2010 is to create a “2010 Summer to Remember,” sketch journal and scrapbook. As moms we all know how our children love to sketch, color and collect things. Collecting is second nature to them; why all we have to do is just look in their pockets, backpacks, in their drawers and yes – under their beds and we’ll find evidence of their collecting abilities! They are collectors extraordinaire! They just love to collect things! That’s why creating a 2010 Summer to Remember sketch journal and scrapbook is a fantastic idea.
It doesn’t have to be anything elaborate. You can use a loose-leaf notebook and some paper, a spiral notebook, or a journal or scrapbook if you happen to have one. The entire concept is just to have them sketch, journal and collect small mementos in their book throughout the summer. They can do it everyday, once a week, or every other week. They can do a sketch of a family outing or they can sketch something in nature (flowers, bumble bees, butterflies or an entire garden). Their journal will tell the story of their summer – bike rides, trips to the pool, playing with their friends, family barbeques, the list is endless.
Children can sketch, color and write a sentence or two about their experience. They can press and tape flowers in their journal or save a ticket stub from a ball game or trip to the fair. They can even put photos in their book. When summer is over they will have created their own, “2010 Summer to Remember Sketch Journal and Scrapbook.” And, when they are grown they will look back at the book that they created. They will smile, laugh at their drawings and remember…the summer of 2010.
