Summer is drawing to a close which means back to school! The kids may not be so happy, but many parents are jumping for joy. They can’t wait for those learning doors to open. Why is this?

As a parent I adore and always look forward to those summer months of vacations, planning fun activities and events. But, by mid-August the kids start getting antsy and crabby which then seems to permeate the entire household. What’s the remedy? Back to school!

My husband and I started a tradition a couple of years ago. To make back to school a fun event for all, my husband takes the day off from work. . We all wake up and have a hearty breakfast, taking pictures and dropping off our oldest at school. This year we have two kids jumping on the school bandwagon so this tradition just got more exciting. After both kids are in school my husband and I will drop our toddler off with grandma and grandpa and will have a mommy and daddy date until school lets out! It’s really fantastic and recommended if you can swing this.

If you can’t get a day off, plan to rent a movie or go out to dinner to celebrate the end of summer and back to school. End of summer and back to school can be a fun time for parents and kids. We just have to be positive about it. Somehow I don’t think that will be a problem for most parents. It’s all in how we make it!

Happy first day of school!

The Horn of Africa is experiencing its worst drought in over fifty years. The extreme drought has resulted in loss of livestock, increasing food prices and rising conflict. Tens of thousands have died of starvation in Somalia, Kenya, Ethiopia and Djibouti. The most vulnerable are children. Of the over ten million affected across the Horn of Africa two million are children under the age of five.

To survive, thousands of families are forced to walk miles in scorching heat, with little food or water, to reach emergency centers set up by the United Nations Childrens Fund, UNICEF. These centers are under extreme pressure just to keep up with minimum demand for services.

Contributions are needed for:

- Food

- Medicine

- Fresh Water (boreholes to be drilled to provide safe drinking water)

- Sanitation (to prevent cholera)

- Mosquito nets (to prevent malaria)

Just $10.00 can provide 321 sachets of Multiple Micronutrient Powder to give needed vitamins to boost infant survival.

$40.00 can provide a scale to accurately monitor children’s weight.

$80.00 can provide 1,000 sachets of Oral Rehydration Salts to help children combat dehydration.

Your help at any level is important and appreciated. Please give. Go to www.unicefusa.org. Click on Donate to save children in the Horn of Africa drought crisis.
